GENERAL QUESTIONS
What is scalp micropigmentation (SMP)?
Scalp micropigmentation is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment that uses specialized pigment to replicate the appearance of natural hair follicles. It creates the look of fuller hair, increased density, or a clean shaved scalp depending on your needs.
Who is SMP for?
SMP is suitable for men and women experiencing thinning hair, receding hairlines, baldness, postpartum hair loss, alopecia, or visible scalp scars. Treatments are fully customized based on hair loss stage, skin type, and aesthetic goals.
Is SMP only for men?
No. SMP is increasingly popular with women, especially for thinning hair, widening part lines, postpartum shedding, and diffuse density loss. Women’s SMP focuses on subtle enhancement rather than a shaved look.
Does SMP look fake or tattooed?
When done correctly, SMP does not look like a tattoo. It is designed to look like natural hair follicles and blend seamlessly with your existing hair or scalp in all lighting conditions.
Treatment & Process
How many sessions are required?
Most SMP treatments at Toronto Scalp Micropigmentation Studio are completed over 3 sessions, allowing the result to be built gradually and naturally. In some full scalp cases, additional sessions may occasionally be recommended depending on coverage, skin response, and treatment goals.
Why are multiple sessions necessary?
Layering pigment gradually allows for natural healing, proper pigment retention, and realistic depth. This approach prevents over-saturation and ensures long-lasting results.
How long does each session take?
Sessions typically last 1.5–3 hours, depending on the treatment area and density required.
Is SMP painful?
Most clients describe SMP as mildly uncomfortable rather than painful. Sensation varies by individual and treatment area, but it is generally well tolerated.
Results & Appearance
How soon will I see results?
You will notice visible improvement after your first session, with results refining and softening as additional sessions are completed and the pigment heals.
Will SMP match my natural hair colour?
Yes. Pigment is carefully selected and adjusted to match your natural hair tone and skin undertones for a realistic, blended appearance.
Does SMP fade over time?
SMP is long-lasting but not permanent like traditional tattooing. Some gradual fading may occur over several years, with optional touch-ups to maintain optimal appearance.
Can SMP change if my hair loss progresses?
Yes. SMP can be adapted over time if hair loss progresses, allowing for added density or coverage as needed.
Women's SMP
Is SMP safe for women?
Yes. SMP is safe for women and does not damage hair follicles. It is designed to work with existing hair, not replace it.
Can SMP help with postpartum hair loss?
Yes. SMP can visually restore density during postpartum shedding while hair naturally regrows. Timing is discussed during consultation to ensure the best results.
Will SMP make my hair fall out?
No. SMP works on the surface of the skin and does not interfere with hair follicles or cause additional hair loss.
Alopecia Considerations
Is SMP suitable for alopecia?
In many cases, yes. SMP can help reduce visible contrast and improve overall scalp appearance. Suitability depends on the type and stability of alopecia.
Can SMP make alopecia worse?
No. SMP does not cause or worsen alopecia. However, timing matters if hair loss is actively progressing, which is why consultation is important.
Scar Concealment
Can SMP hide hair transplant scars?
Yes. SMP is very effective for blending FUE dot scars and FUT strip scars by softening contrast and improving visual balance.
Will SMP completely remove a scar?
SMP does not remove scars, but it significantly reduces their visibility by blending pigment into the surrounding area.
Aftercare & Healing
How long is the healing process?
Initial healing begins in the first several days after treatment, with the scalp gradually settling and softening as it heals. The appearance of the pigment continues to refine over the following days and weeks.
When can I wash my hair?
You should avoid washing the treated area for the first 4 days after each SMP session. After that, you can begin washing gently with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, using your hands only and avoiding any scrubbing.
Can I work out after SMP?
Heavy sweating, intense exercise, gym workouts, running, sports, saunas, and steam rooms should be avoided for the first 4 days after each SMP session. After the initial healing period, normal activity can gradually resume.
Can I go in the sun or swim?
Direct sun exposure and swimming should be avoided during the first 4 days after each SMP session. Once healed, protecting the scalp from sun exposure with SPF is recommended to help maintain the appearance of your results over time.
Longevity & Maintenance
How long does SMP last?
Results typically last several years. Longevity depends on skin type, sun exposure, lifestyle, and aftercare.
Will I need touch-ups?
SMP is designed to be long-lasting and low maintenance, but some clients choose occasional touch-ups over time to keep the result looking fresh and refined.
Safety & Hygiene
Is SMP safe?
Yes. SMP is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment performed using medical-grade pigments and sterile, single-use needles.
Do you follow Ontario health standards?
Yes. We follow all Ontario cleanliness, sanitation, and disinfection standards to maintain a safe, professional treatment environment.
Eyebrow Microblading
What is eyebrow microblading?
Eyebrow microblading is a precision technique that uses fine, hair-like strokes to enhance the shape, balance, and definition of the brows. Pigment is carefully implanted into the superficial layers of the skin to create natural-looking results that blend seamlessly with your existing brow hair.
Will my brows look natural?
Yes. Our approach to eyebrow microblading is intentionally subtle and conservative. Each treatment is customized to your natural brow structure, skin tone, and facial features to ensure results look soft, realistic, and undetectable in everyday life.
How long does eyebrow microblading last?
Eyebrow microblading is long-lasting but not permanent. Most clients enjoy results for 1–3 years, depending on skin type, lifestyle, sun exposure, and aftercare. Periodic touch-ups help maintain optimal shape and definition over time.
How many sessions are required for eyebrow microblading?
Eyebrow microblading is typically completed over two sessions. The initial session establishes shape and structure, while a follow-up appointment allows for refinement, density adjustments, and tone balancing once the brows have healed.
Is microblading painful or damaging to the skin?
Discomfort is minimal and well-managed, and the procedure is performed with care and precision. When done correctly, eyebrow microblading does not damage the skin and heals naturally. We provide aftercare guidance to support proper healing and long-term results.
