If you’re considering scalp micropigmentation but still have questions, start here.
Scalp micropigmentation — commonly called SMP — is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment that recreates the appearance of natural hair follicles using thousands of tiny pigment impressions.
It can restore the look of a shaved hairline, make thinning hair appear denser, reduce visible scalp and camouflage certain scars. But what does it actually look like? Does it hurt? How long does it last? And how do you know if it’s right for you?
Here’s what you need to know.
What Is Scalp Micropigmentation?
SMP uses tiny, carefully placed pigment impressions to replicate the appearance of natural hair follicles.
Depending on your hair loss, it can:
• Recreate the appearance of a shaved head
• Restore or redefine a receding hairline
• Make thinning hair appear fuller
• Reduce the appearance of visible scalp
• Camouflage certain scars
• Improve the appearance of sparse facial hair
SMP does not grow new hair. Instead, it changes the way hair loss looks by creating the illusion of follicles and greater density.
Who Is SMP For?
SMP can work for both men and women experiencing: baldness, receding hairlines, thinning crowns, diffuse thinning, widening parts, visible scalp, scalp scars, patchy facial hair, and faded existing SMP.
You also do not need to be completely bald to benefit from SMP.
For clients with existing hair, pigmentation can be placed between the hairs to reduce scalp contrast and create the appearance of greater density.

Does SMP Look Real?
Yes. Natural-looking SMP depends on much more than simply placing pigment on the scalp.
We carefully control:
Impression size
Pigment shade
Density
Spacing
Hairline shape
Blending
Placement
Natural follicles aren't perfectly identical, so SMP shouldn't look perfectly uniform either. The goal is not for someone to notice your scalp micropigmentation. The goal is for them to see what looks like hair.
Is SMP a Tattoo?
SMP is a form of cosmetic pigmentation, but the finished result is very different from a conventional tattoo. Traditional tattooing is designed to create visible artwork. SMP uses extremely small individual impressions specifically designed to mimic shaved hair follicles. The result should look like hair, not ink.
How Is My SMP Colour Chosen?
There is no single SMP shade. Your pigment is customized based on your:
Natural hair colour
Skin tone
Undertones
Existing hair
Desired result
Pigment concentration can also be adjusted throughout treatment. This helps the finished impressions blend naturally instead of appearing too dark, flat or artificial.
Does SMP Hurt?
Most clients describe SMP as mild and manageable. Some parts of the scalp can be more sensitive than others, but breaks can be taken whenever needed. We also offer complimentary topical numbing for clients who would prefer additional comfort.
How Many SMP Sessions Will I Need?
Most standard treatments include up to three sessions. Rather than creating an overly dark result in one appointment, SMP is gradually layered.
This allows us to refine:
Density
Colour
Hairline design
Blending
Overall balance
It also gives us the ability to see how your skin heals before adding more pigment.
Plus, every client receives one complimentary touch-up appointment.
That appointment is in addition to your standard treatment sessions.
Will I See Results After One Session?
Yes. Most clients see a noticeable visual difference after their first treatment. However, the result is intentionally built across multiple sessions to achieve the appropriate density and refinement. Fresh SMP also appears darker immediately after treatment and gradually softens as the scalp heals.
What Is the Healing Process Like?
There is no surgical recovery period. Temporary redness or sensitivity can occur immediately after treatment, and the pigment will initially appear darker than the final healed result. As the scalp heals, the impressions gradually softens. You'll receive straightforward aftercare instructions covering things such as washing, sweating, swimming and sun exposure. Most clients return to their normal day-to-day routine very quickly.
Does SMP Damage Hair Follicles?
No. SMP is performed superficially within the skin and is designed to complement your existing hair rather than remove or transplant it. This is particularly important for density treatments, where pigment is placed between existing hairs. SMP improves the appearance of hair loss. It does not treat the medical cause of hair loss.
What If My Hair Keeps Thinning?
Your SMP can evolve with you. If your hair loss progresses, treatment can often be extended into newly thinning areas or adjusted over time. This is one reason we favour natural, conservative hairlines and gradual treatment planning rather than overly aggressive designs.
How Long Does SMP Last?
Scalp micropigmentation is designed to last for years. It does not suddenly disappear. Instead, pigment gradually softens and fades over time. How quickly this happens depends on factors including:
Skin type
Sun exposure
Lifestyle
Treatment area
Aftercare
When enough fading eventually occurs, a touch-up can restore the appearance.

What Makes Good SMP Look Real?
It comes down to the details.
Impression Size
Natural follicles are tiny. SMP impressions should be too.
Hairline Design
Your hairline should fit your face and age — not look stamped on.
Pigment Selection
The pigment should complement your hair and skin rather than simply appearing black.
Spacing
Natural follicles don't grow in a perfect grid.
Density
Enough to create the desired effect without overpowering the scalp.
Blending
Treated areas should transition naturally into existing hair.
Restraint
Sometimes knowing when to stop is just as important as knowing where to add more.
How Do I Choose an SMP Artist?
Look closely at the actual work. Before choosing a studio, consider:
Does the SMP look natural?
Are the impressions small and realistic?
Do the hairlines suit each client?
Are there multiple results to review?
Is treatment customized?
Is pricing transparent?
Is aftercare explained?
Are touch-ups discussed?
SMP is highly visual. Choose an artist whose results look like something you would actually want on your own scalp.
What If I Don't Know What Treatment I Need?
You don't need to. That's what your consultation is for. Tell us what bothers you about your hair and what you would like to improve. We'll assess your scalp and existing hair, explain what SMP can realistically accomplish and recommend the treatment approach that makes the most sense.
Am I Committing to Treatment by Booking a Consultation?
No. Consultations at Toronto Scalp Micropigmentation Studio are completely complimentary and obligation-free. Your consultation gives you the opportunity to:
Have your hair and scalp assessed
Discuss your goals
Understand your options
Ask questions
Review pricing
Receive a personalized treatment recommendation
You can then decide whether SMP is right for you.
