One of the most common questions we hear is: "Will my scalp micropigmentation eventually turn blue?"

It's a fair concern. Many people have seen old tattoos that faded into blue or green over time, and assume scalp micropigmentation behaves the same way. The good news is that modern scalp micropigmentation is very different from traditional tattooing. When high-quality pigments are used, the treatment is performed correctly, and the impressions are placed at the proper depth, SMP should fade gradually over the years rather than changing to an unnatural colour.

WHY SOME TATTOOS TURN BLUE

Traditional body tattoos are designed to sit much deeper in the skin. Over time, exposure to sunlight, the body's natural immune response, and pigment breakdown can change how certain tattoo inks appear beneath the skin. This is why older tattoos sometimes develop blue, green, or faded tones.

Scalp micropigmentation uses a completely different technique.

The impressions are much smaller, are placed more superficially, and are designed specifically to replicate the appearance of shaved hair follicles rather than create permanent artwork.

DOES MODERN SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION TURN BLUE?

In most cases, no. When performed correctly using premium scalp micropigmentation pigments, SMP should gradually become lighter as it naturally fades.

At Toronto Scalp Micropigmentation Studio, we use Ghost Ink, a premium carbon-based pigment developed specifically for scalp micropigmentation.

Rather than changing to blue or green, Ghost Ink is designed to maintain a natural appearance and fade evenly over time. Clients with naturally sensitive skin, dryness, inflammation, or existing scalp irritation may notice slightly more discomfort during treatment.

WHY SOME SMP CAN CHANGE COLOUR

Although uncommon with modern techniques, poor-quality scalp micropigmentation can develop unwanted tones over time.

Common causes include:

  • Low-quality tattoo ink

  • Pigments not designed specifically for SMP

  • Implanting pigment too deeply

  • Oversaturation

  • Inexperienced technicians

  • Incorrect pigment selection

  • Poor treatment planning

These problems are generally the result of technique—not scalp micropigmentation itself.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT CLINIC MATTERS

Although uncommon with modern techniques, poor-quality scalp micropigmentation can develop unwanted tones over time.

Common causes include:

  • Pigment quality

  • Technician experience

  • Correct needle depth

  • Conservative application

  • Proper aftercare

Choosing an experienced practitioner using professional SMP pigments significantly reduces the risk of unnatural-looking results.
